When a parent, partner or relative starts to need more support with daily life, the decisions ahead can feel overwhelming. One option that families often don't know much about is domiciliary care, and it's one that can genuinely transform someone's quality of life, while keeping them in the place they love most: home.
What exactly is domiciliary care?
Domiciliary care (sometimes called home care or community care) is professional care delivered in a person's own home, rather than in a residential care facility. A trained carer visits the person, often daily and sometimes several times a day, and provides the support they need to live safely, comfortably and independently.
That support can range from help with getting washed and dressed in the morning, to medication reminders, meal preparation, companionship, or help with light household tasks. It's personal, flexible, and built around the individual rather than the needs of an institution.
Who is domiciliary care for?
Home care is suitable for a wide range of people and situations, including:
- Older adults who want to stay in their own home as they age
- People recovering from a hospital stay or operation
- Those living with dementia or cognitive challenges
- People with physical disabilities or long-term health conditions
- Individuals whose family carers need respite
What does a home care visit look like?
At TLC, every care package is built around the individual. Before care begins, we carry out a free home assessment with the client and their family to understand their needs, preferences and routines. From this, we create a personalised care plan that is reviewed regularly and updated as circumstances change.
Visits can last from 30 minutes to several hours, depending on what's needed. Your carer will be the same familiar face as often as possible, because consistency and trust are at the heart of good care.
How is domiciliary care funded?
Home care can be funded privately (paid directly by the client or family) or through local authority funding, following a care assessment by the relevant council. Some people also use a combination of both. The process of navigating funding can feel daunting, but you don't have to figure it out alone. Our team is happy to talk you through the options.
How is TLC regulated?
TLC is registered with and regulated by Care Inspectorate Wales (CIW), the independent regulator for social care in Wales. All our carers are DBS-checked, fully trained, and supported by an experienced care management team. You can trust that the care your loved one receives meets the highest professional standards.
